Amazing - this algae survived space!

Algae Survives 530 Days in Outer Space

A particular species of algae found in the Arctic Circle have successfully survived in outer space for a period of 530 days. Of course, these algae are accustomed to dealing with severe weather conditions, but despite the fact that the Arctic Circle is a very hostile environment, it is not as hostile as outer space. In an experiment carried out at International Space Station, a collection of algae from the Arctic Circle were placed on a panel outside the ISS, where they were left for a period of 530 days.

During their time in open space, the algae were exposed to extreme ultraviolet radiation and temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 47 degrees Celsius. Added to this was the fact that they were exposed to the vacuum of space. Prior to being placed outside, the algae were kept dormant, with virtually no metabolism, and no growth. Surprisingly, then the algae were returned to earth, they once again began acting as they normally would.
