Establishing the Shape of the Milky Way

The milky way is our home galaxy while its shape has remained unestablished.

Scientists may have uncovered a new method of shaping the Milky Way by determining the distance between stars and Earth through 3D measurements.

According to the latest technique, it is more warped and less flat than earlier studies have suggested.  The 3D technique also emphasises on special stars known as Cepheids, which exhibit varying levels of brightness over time.

Cepheids are believed to interact with the 4 major spiral arms of the Milky Way, which is part of the efforts from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, or OGLE project, which attempts to paint a clearer picture of the galaxy.

Space experts believe that Cepheids may also provide new information regarding the age of stars.
