Mars Spacesuit Tested in Iceland

Mars is the closest planetary to Earth, but its climate and air quality are much different. A team of space experts from Iceland have tested a spacesuit that mimics the conditions of Mars when worn.

The prototype outfit was specially designed at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). A space team tested the quality of the suit in the volcanic and mountainous regions of Iceland, which resemble Martian landscapes. Wearers moved around in the outfit and scaled the face of mountains.

Space agencies have plans to manufacture customized space body suits that would cater to the differing dimensions of astronauts. The Martian suit may be an integral step in the design process.
